WHY IS SOCIAL SCIENCES THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR ME?

In the future, people will be likely to change their careers many times through their working lives. One reason for that is the changing dynamics of the workplace. Emphasis and value are now placed on overall contribution rather than specialisation in particular subject areas. Many employers tell us that they want graduates who have broader knowledge and skill rather than specialists.

As in many countries, jobs in New Zealand are moving from traditional employment areas – such as manufacturing – to areas where the work is predominantly with people and information – the services sector. This sector currently accounts for over half the jobs in New Zealand. Social Sciences provide much of the core knowledge for this growth area in the jobs of the future – in human services, social research, administration, policy, research, advocacy, and management, across the public, not-for-profit and private sectors.

A SOCIAL SCIENCES PROGRAMME AT AUT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU IF:

  • You want to understand more about people – individuals, families, whānau, aiga, iwi, groups, organisations, communities, societies and cultures – and what makes them 'tick’;
  • You value a supportive environment with academic staff strongly committed to teaching, and helping you develop your academic potential.

Dr Oksana Opara

Head of Department of Social Sciences
