We warmly welcome you to the School of Education Te Kura Mātauranga, one of the four Schools in AUT’s Faculty of Applied Humanities. Most of our programmes are offered from our North Shore (Akoranga) campus but some are offered from our Wellesley Street and Manukau sites. Increasingly in our programmes there is an emphasis on flexible delivery, with some papers offered partly online, and others through summer school.
The School is unique in its vision, and consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi principles of partnership, protection, and participation is committed to
- serving our communities
- promoting excellence in teaching, research and scholarship
- demonstrating quality through the expression of diversity and difference.
We have a major focus on teacher education. The School offers early years, primary, secondary and tertiary teacher education programmes at a variety of entry levels. In line with our vision, we have also developed unique teacher education programmes with a difference - in Montessori, Pasifika, and Steiner. We maintain strong professional links with teachers and principals through centres and schools.
At the tertiary teaching level the School offers both entry level and advanced opportunities for learning. Our connections with our communities are strong.
The School is committed to equity of access to all students who have the potential to succeed. We recognise our obligations to all sections of the community and our special obligation to Maori and Pasifika peoples.
The School seeks long term professional relationships with its students, often initially as part of teacher education programmes and later in assisting them further develop professionally and academically. Our programmes 'staircase’, often offering students multiple entry and exit points, but always the opportunity to build on an existing qualification and take their learning further.
Our postgraduate programmes offer small classes. We offer one year Masters programmes, an MEd as well as postgraduate certificates and diplomas that include some specialties. Our PhD and EdD programmes attract not only researchers but busy professionals. The School of Education Te Kura Mātauranga is committed to lifelong learning.
Research is an important part of our core business. The School has won major research contracts and our staff engage in personal research and consultancy.
The School of Education Te Kura Mātauranga is committed to the conservation, advancement and dissemination of knowledge, understanding, and skill in education through teaching and research of the highest quality.
