Meet our Staff


Meet the senior staff responsible for administration, recruiting and teaching at AUT International House. Most of our staff members have worked overseas and have extensive experience in education.

 

Academic Team

Michael Giacon BA, Dip Tchg, MA Lang Tchg (Hons), MA (Hons), RSA CTEFLA
Head of School

Michael helped establish the school in 1989. As Head of School he manages the academic and administration staff and oversees the teaching programmes together with the academic team. Michael has been teaching since 1980 and has experience teaching in Italy. Michael is also an International House visitor.

Karen Rutherford BA, RSA CTEFLA, RSA DTEFLA, MA (Hons) Language Teaching
Deputy Head of School, Senior Lecturer


Karen has been involved in the field of language teaching since 1984 and has worked for International House in Finland, Egypt, England and Portugal.  She is one of the founding staff  members at AUT IH and has worked  here since 1990.  She coordinates UCLES, ESOL, FCE and CAE programmes at AUT IH and has an interest in teacher development. She is an IH visitor.

Anne Sweeney Grad. Dip. TESOL, M Applied Linguistics (Hons)
Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader 

Anne joined AUT International House in 2002. She has extensive experience overseas and in New Zealand as a teacher, Director of Studies, curriculum developer and teacher trainer. She is a Cambridge/RSA CELTA teacher trainer and assessor.

Rachael Harding BA, RSA CTEFLA, RSA DELTA
Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader (On Leave) 

Rachael joined AUT International House in 2002 and oversees the afternoon programmes. She has worked in the Czech Republic, Spain and the UK, where she is originally from. Rachael has an interest in materials development, CALL and teacher training.

Michael Rovers RSA CELTA, Dip SLT, BA, MA (Hons)
Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader

Michael has been teaching English since 1989. He lived and taught in Japan for five years and joined AUT IH in 2000. He is interested in materials development.

Sandrine Benzitoun Dip Travel and Tourism
Academic Administration Assistant

Sandrine is originally from France and has been working in the English teaching industry since 2003. She has lived and worked in both the UK and the USA. She speaks English, French, German and Spanish.

Administration Team

Sunki Min BA Asian Studies - Japanese, Japanese Language & Culture
Administration Manager

Sunki processes new enrolments and helps current students with any queries. She has worked in Korea and Japan. Sunki is originally from Korea and is fluent in Korean, Japanese and English.

Mayumi Inoue-Matamua Dip Home Economics

Receptionist

Mayumi is the key contact person for the students. She helps them in a wide range of administrative capacities. Mayumi is originally from Japan and speaks both Japanese and English.

Delwyn Wilson 
Accommodation Coordinator


Delwyn joined AUT International House in March 2003. Prior to this she worked in AUT Student Services for 10 years.

Bronwyn Hughes BA Psychology, BMus
Accommodation Assistant

 

Bronwyn has a background in music teaching and administration. She joined AUT International House in February 2008.

 

AeroPort 2000 Ltd

Airport Meeting Co-ordinator

Students will be met at the airport by an AeroPort 2000 Ltd representative and be taken to their host family.

Isobel Bailey BA (Hons) Language and Linguistic Science, Post Graduate Diploma in TESOL
Senior Lecturer

Isobel has previously taught in Taiwan and joined AUT International House in 2001.
Tim Blackman BA (Hons) Arabic Studies, CTEFLA, Dip TESOL, Med in ELT (Manchester)
Senior Lecturer (On Leave)

Tim started teaching in Cairo in 1993 and came to AUT IH from the UK in 2002.
Michael Clark BA, MA (Hons) History, TTC, Dip Tchg, RSA CELTA, MA (Hons) Language Teaching
Senior Lecturer

Michael has taught in Portugal, Japan, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. He has been a lecturer at AUT IH since 2000.
Tom Gibson TTC, Cert Adult Ed, Dip TESOL
Lecturer

Tom has extensive teaching experience in New Zealand schools and correctional institutions specialising in remedial education, ESL and special needs.

Robin Guenzel BA, Grad Dip TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics

Lecturer

Originally from the US, Robin has lived in New Zealand since 1998 and started working at AUT International House in 1999. She has taught in Japan as well as her home country and has also lived in Germany, Italy and the UK. She can speak German and has familiarity with Spanish and Italian.

Robbie Kerr currently Grad Dip TESOL, Cambridge CELTA, HND Civil Engineering, HND Phot (Fashion & Advertising)
Lecturer

Robbie taught in his native England before running his own business. He travelled the world extensively before settling in New Zealand in 1997, joining AUT IH in 1999.
Katy Nichols BA, Dip TESL, currently MA Applied Linguistics
Lecturer

Katy has been an ESL teacher since 1990 in both New Zealand and Japan. She joined AUT IH in 2001. She speaks Japanese and is also a co-ordinator for the Student Activity Programme at International House.
Jennie Riddle Dip Tchg, Grad Dip TESOL, MA TESOL
Senior Lecturer

Jennie has extensive experience in the TESOL field in Language teaching, management, curriculum design and materials development both overseas and in New Zealand. She speaks Hindustani.

Ngaire Rix BA (German and Spanish), Post Grad Dip TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics

Senior Lecturer


Ngaire started teaching English in 1996 and taught in Australia, Japan, Poland and England before coming to AUT IH in 2002.

Tony Shuttleworth BA English Literature/Politic studies, MA Politic studies, Cambridge CELTA, Cambridge DELTA
Lecturer

Tony has lived and taught in Portugal and England. He has been at AUT IH since 2002.
Paul Sutcliffe BA, Dip Tchg, RSA CELTA, MA Language Tchg
Lecturer

Paul has taught and lived in Japan, Australia and Britain. He has an interest in critical language issues and vocabulary development. Paul is a co-ordinator for the Student Activity Programme at International House.
 

Jackie Granados-Johnson Cert. Ed, B. Ed, Grad. Dip. Ed, Cambridge CELTA
Lecturer

Jackie worked with international students, migrants and refugees for many years in the U.K. She came to New Zealand in 2003, and has worked at AUT IH since 2004. She speaks French and some Spanish, and is the Harassment Contact at International House.


 

Mark Lewis BA, Cert. TESOL. Cert. Mandarin Studies
Lecturer

Mark has a background in business as well as teaching and has lived and worked in Asia for many years.
He speaks Chinese (Mandarin) and a little Japanese. He joined AUT IH in 2007.


 

Koru Vautier TESOL, BA. Eng. Lit.
Lecturer

Koru is from Auckland but grew up in Hong Kong. She has lived and taught English in Australia, Japan and Korea and joined AUT IH in 2007.
