AUT has signed an historic document with the Mana Whenua of Tamaki Makau Rau, Ngati Whatua o Orakei, which aims to recognise agreements made in 1840 between the Crown and local iwi.

For the University it signals an opportunity to work in partnership with Ngati Whatua to make a positive difference to the region’s economic, health and social well being impacting on individuals, families and the community.

At the signing on Friday October 29 at Orakei Marae, AUT Chancellor Wyn Hoadley spoke of the opportunity to learn, to understand each other and work together in education for the young and the elderly.

Ngati Whatua Kaumatua and Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board chairman Sir Hugh Kawharu said the hapu were looking forward to working with AUT to achieve the many dreams and aspirations of Ngati Whatua.

“I hope this will eventuate into some action, but that’s dependent on both of us,” he said. “For our part we are very anxious to sit down and work out a kaupapa after today. The important thing is to make a start and to celebrate the achievement.”
